2 questions. Will guitar center restring my bass? and what are the best bass strings to buy?

Hi, i recently got a fender deluxe active jazz bass and a part on the bridge looked messed up so i loosened my E string and fixed it and when ituned it up, it buzzed alot. so i just took the strings off before i did any real damage. i dont know how to restring a bass but i know its more complicated that a 6 string guitar. so my question is does guitar center restirng bass guitars, and what are the best strings to use for a jazz bass? i play mostly classic rock.

Yes guitar center does restring basses. As for what type of strings to get I think it’s better to give you some general information first. Bass strings come in three basic categories: Roundwound, flatwound and groundwound strings. Roundwound strings are the most common. They have a somewhat rough texture under your fingers and can eat away at frets faster then other strings. The advantage of roundwound strings is they have a bright tone that’s a must for certain playing techniques like slap bass. Most of the time you’re picking between stainless steel roundwound and nickel roundwound. Stainless steel has the very bright sound and can add a lot of “clank” and finger noise to your sound. Nickel has some brightness but doesn’t extenuate the “clank” and finger noise as much as stainless steel. Flatwound strings have a very smooth texture and are very gentle on your frets. Flatwounds have a “mushy” midrange tone that may sound “dead” when compared to bright roundwound strings. Flatwounds have less sustain then roundwound strings however for most bass styles this isn’t a major concern. Groundwound strings are a compromise between roundwound and flatwound strings. They have the smooth texture feel of flatwounds with some brightness like a roundwound string. For classic rock if you’re playing more of the newer classic rock like the late 70’s and the 80’s I would go with nickel roundwound strings. If you’re more of a 60’s and early 70’s kind of guy I would go with flatwounds for that vintage “thump”.

XBaBoonX does a lot of good flatwound/roundwound comparison videos and it’s a good place to listen to the difference between different types and brands of strings.

Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Jim Hall (guitar); Bob Cranshaw (bass); Ben Riley, Harry T. Saunders (drums).Recorded at RCA Victor Studios, New York, New York on January 30 & February 13 & 14, 1962. Originally released on RCA (2527). Includes liner notes by FRancis Davis and George Avakian. The 1962 release of THE BRIDGE marked the end of Sonny Rollins’s two year-plus hiatus from live performance and recording. An absolutely stunning comeback, the album clearly shows both the technical and spiritual benefits that can be gained from intense woodshedding. Sonny’s tone, already legendary, is even more wonderfully full and mellow here. The whole band, especially the amazing Bob Cranshaw on bass, swings so breezily and blows so delicately, even on the up-tempo numbers, that “hard” bop almost seems a misnomer. The album’s title refers to an actual bridge (the Willamsburg, which connects Manhattan and Brooklyn), where Sonny spent long hours practicing alone, and the record possesses a deep, meditative quality which conjures perfectly the image of the city rushing by while a solitary man sits immersed in his music. Guitarist Jim Hall in particular seems to instinctively pick up on Sonny’s vibe. On Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” Hall unfolds long, lush lines that are a model of taste and restraint, perfectly complementing every note of Sonny’s sexy, bluesy solos. One of Sonny Rollins’s finest albums, THE BRIDGE gives the listener an overwhelming sense of rightness.

Yamaha Guitar Parts
beginning guitar?

This is a three part question. So I’m going to learn how to play Acoustic guitar in a couple of days. I’m buying an FG700S. I’m also getting a case, picks, some teach yourself guitar books, but not a tuner.
1. Is a Yamaha FG700S a good guitar?
2. Do I have to get a tuner if I can tune other instruments?
3. ANything else I need ot get? Do I have to get a stand?

Thanks!

OK the things to look for in a quality guitar are;
1. solid top or soundboard (most important)
2. Rosewood finger board and bridge

This Yamaha has all these so I’ld say yes, not a bad little starter guitar. I recommend a digital tuner as well, (5 to 25 usd) and a variety of picks. Also get a couple sets of strings if you have the $ handy.
They have and assortment of things too that you may want. I recommend either a wall hanger or guitar stand to keep the guitar handy to grab, it makes it less hassle, therefore easier and more likely for you to practice. I keep mine next to my favorite chair.

What You Need to Know to Play Electric Guitar

In order for you to play electric guitar professionally, you will be expected to learn a few things first.  The basic things you should know about electric guitar playing are the following:  an amplifier, the guitar pick, the amplifier cord, and most importantly, the electric guitar itself.  Learning how to appreciate electric guitar playing can be achieved as long as you have a working knowledge of what these are and how they work.

The standard electric guitar comes in a lot of variations.  There is the bass guitar, the plain electric guitar, the acoustic guitar, the electric acoustic guitar and several others more.  Each of these guitars has their own characteristics and unique qualities.  A simple electric guitar is best played using an amplifier because of the tune which will help enhance the guitar sound as well as define the riffs even more.

What makes electric guitars different from the standard guitars is that it features several buttons that are used for music adjustment.  These buttons include: a three volume and tone button specifically for adjusting the volume and sound quality of the guitar, the pickup switch that is used for the purpose of magnifying sounds, and the tremolo which is a steel bar that is connected to the electric guitar’s bridge.  If you move this up and down, the pitch of the bridge will get altered and you will have sounds with different pitches.

In order for you to play the guitar more efficiently, it is best that you have your own electric guitar where you can keep on practicing.  Besides the chords, the tabs and the notes, you will also want to learn solo guitar riffs and guitar scales.  You will be able to learn this as soon as you use all the frets thereby creating a more rhythmic tune perfect for those solos.

Another method you should take note of when you want to play electric guitar is the major and the minor scales, including the chromatic sales, the pentatonic scales, as well as their inversions.  The third note is the only thing that differentiates the major from the minor notes.  This note adds more upbeat and darker tones to both the major and minor notes.  Familiarizing yourself with these two scales will help you realize how different they are with the third scale.  Knowing how to play electric guitar is easy as long as you have the drive to learn and enhance your knowledge in the skill.

String Guitar Bridge
What is the best way to remove a guitar string without scratching the bridge pins?

I can’t pull it out myself, its really wedged in there.

With the info you gave here i have to assume a few factors. In general you need some pushing or pulling help. First thing i would try is removing string from tuning head wrap it around hand and pull (if its thinner string put on a glove or wrap a rag around hand) Any help NO well try to place hand inside of hole and see if you can push it out . NO well then try spraying lube on peg (no silicone type as they can affect finish TRIFLOW best). NO well then you have to use a pair of pliers place a rag on peg to avoid scratching or go buy some new pegs and replace them all. Hod rods have some that can also bring you a better sound. Every cloud has a silver lining . Keep rocking :)
